Political resistance, implementation gap and lack of public awareness have been identified as stumbling blocks to perpetual constitutional review Nigeria.
Senator Representing Kwara-North Senatorial District, Senator Sulaiman Sadiq-Umar dropped this hint today while speaking on the topic “Pros and Cons of ongoing Constitutional Review” at the 2025 Kwara State Television Authority KWTV NUJ Chapel Press Week held at Press Centre, Ilorin.
Senator Sadiq-Umar said Constitution of any nation is more than just a legal framework but a social contract that defines identity, governance, and the aspirations of the people it serves.
The Lawmaker pointed out that for Nigeria, a country of over 200 million diverse citizens, the Constitution must be responsive to change and representative of all and described ongoing constitutional review as timely and essential.
He expressed the hope that the ongoing review presents an opportunity for broader inclusion particularly to give voice to historically marginalized groups and allows the Nigerian people to take ownership of their governance.
Senator Sadiq-Umar opined that the review also offers a platform to entrench gender and youth inclusion in ensuring that the democracy is truly participatory.
According to him, the process will provide a chance to deepen federalism, through mechanisms like devolution of powers, state policing, and enhanced local government autonomy.
The Senator charged journalists as fourth estate of the realm to demystify the process, inform citizens, and hold leaders accountable achieve an egalitarian nation.
