Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kwara State Council, has called on the Kwara State Government to extend ongoing infrastructural upgrading to state-owned media houses to enable them perform optimally in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The call formed part of resolutions reached at the May Congress of the Council held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, in Ilorin, where issues relating to union matters, state development, journalism practice, and national security were extensively discussed.

In the communiqué issued at the end of the congress by the Chairman of Communique drafting Committee, Hajia Bashirat Bola Ayantola and Secretary, Sodiq Adebara, the Union commended the state government for the ongoing infrastructural projects across the state, noting that the initiatives would further enhance socio-economic growth and improve the living standards of the people.

The Congress also appealed to the state government to approve and commence the payment of peculiar allowances to workers in parastatals and agencies across the state as a way of boosting workers’ morale and productivity.

On professionalism, the Union urged journalists and media practitioners in the state to remain committed to the ethics of the profession and uphold best practices, particularly during the ongoing political activities in the country.

The Congress further sympathized with the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, over the killing of some mobile police officers in the Kaiama axis by suspected bandits, describing the incident as unfortunate and condemnable.

It also condoled with other security agencies over the killing of their personnel, especially members of the National Forest Guards and the Nigerian Army, while calling for stronger synergy among security agencies to combat insecurity across the state.

The Union equally appealed for intensified efforts toward the safe rescue of all persons currently in captivity in Woro, Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.

Congress also mourned with the National League of Veteran Journalists over the demise of three of its members.

The Council reiterated its commitment to promoting professionalism, peace, security, and good governance in Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole.
