Rotary Club Of Ilorin New Dawn Builds 4-Unit Toilet Facility For Aliara Ajara JSS

 Rotary Club of Ilorin New Dawn has constructed a 4-unit toilet facility at Aliara Ajara Junior Secondary School, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The project was executed as part of the club’s Basic Education and Literacy Month activities.

The facility comes with a 1,000-litre overhead water reservoir with borehole reticulation, a hand-washing pointto promote hygiene, separate compartments for boys and girls to ensure privacy, and a standard soak-away system.

Commissioning the project, the District Governor, District 9126, Rotarian Olaniyi Amoo Abdulganiyu Okin, said the facility would improve personal hygiene among students and teachers.

He urged teachers and staff of the school to properly guide the students to prevent misuse of the facility.

Rotarian Amoo commended the Rotary Club of Ilorin New Dawn under the leadership of Rotarian Yetunde Fatoyinbo for embarking on impactful projects aimed at alleviating the suffering of the downtrodden.

In her remarks, the President of the club, Rotarian Yetunde Fatoyinbo, said the event was not just about commissioning blocks and pipes but about restoring dignity, protecting health, promoting learning and creating lasting impact.

Rotarian Fatoyinbo thanked the District Governor for finding time out of his busy schedule to personally commission the project, noting that his presence had elevated the ceremony and encouraged the young club to do more.

She also appreciated the leadership of District 9126 and members of the club for their guidance, sacrifice, financial contributions and physical commitment towards the success of the project.

According to her, during a needs assessment visit to the school, the principal disclosed that students, especially young girls, had no access to decent and hygienic toilets.

The President noted that the project aligns with two of Rotary’s Areas of Focus: Basic Education and Literacy, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

She added that the facility is more than just a toilet, describing it as a tool for school retention, girl-child education, disease prevention and environmental sustainability.

Rotarian Fatoyinbo elucidated that the project is expected to improve sanitation, reduce open defecation, curb water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid, increase school attendance especially among girls, and promote a cleaner and more conducive learning environment as well as hygiene education in line with Rotary International’s goal and Sustainable Development Goals 3, 4 and 6.

Responding, the Aliara Community Leader, Alhaji Saka Ajara, recounted the ordeal faced by students due to the dilapidated toilet which led to open defecation within the school premises.

He urged the school management to assign the Health Prefect to oversee the facility to guard against mismanagement and thanked the Rotary Club of Ilorin New Dawn for the gesture.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Oluwadunmininu Olanrewaju commended the club for coming to their rescue.

The event featured the official tape cutting to inaugurate the project, as well as a quiz competition and cultural display.
