Kwara State Police Command has arrested more than 20 suspected bandits following a recent wave of attacks across the state
Speaking to Newsmen in Ilorin, the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo disclosed that the suspects were apprehended through coordinated efforts involving local intelligence, tactical surveillance, and inter-agency collaboration.
Ojo said the the arrested individuals have been transferred to Abuja for further investigation.
According to him, this is geared towards restoring calm to communities previously rocked by violence.
He noted that the arrests comes in the wake of intensified anti-banditry operations in Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central regions, which forced fleeing criminal elements to seek refuge in Kwara’s forested borderlands.
The Police Commissioner explained that the criminals migrated from neighboring states due to military pressure and found shelter in the Kanji National Park, which extends into Kwara.
The Police Commissioner maintained that air surveillance played a critical role in locating and disrupting the criminal camps as one of the most vulnerable zones, Babassogu, was identified as a key transit point exploited by the bandits.
According to the police, community cooperation was instrumental in several breakthroughs.
On the welfare of police retirees, the CP noted that while agitation for removal from the contributory pension scheme is ongoing, the Inspector General of Police is exploring alternative support measures and initiatives.
He encouraged the Public to download the “NPF Rescue Me” mobile application available on both Android and iOS to report emergencies, share video evidence, and request rapid response during critical incidents.
The the Commissioner thanked traditional rulers and residents for their continued support in safeguarding the state.
He acknowledged one traditional leader who successfully blocked a strategic route often used by the criminals.
