Kwara State Sports Commission has approved a list of 253 athletes, 30 coaches, 18 Association Secretaries and 33 other officials for the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
The other officials include the Executive Chairman of the Commission and the Board members, the Director of Sports, Commission Secretary, Head of Departments, medics, cleaner, drivers, Store Officer, Camp Commandant, Chaperon and Administration Officers.
Addressing the athletes and the officials today, Monday August 25, 2025, ahead of their departure, the Executive Chairman, Mallam Bola Magaji charged the state’s athletes to go for gold.
Mallam Magaji pledged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s determination to reward medalists from the state and urged them to be good Ambassadors.
The National Youth Games (NYG) 2025, which is now in the 9th edition, will hold between August 29 to September 6, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State.
Mallam Magaji said that the athletes are well prepared for the Games, and that government has played its part in ensuring that the state’s participation in the Games was guaranteed.
The Director of Sports, Mallam Ibrahim Bako, while giving the breakdown of the state’s preparations said that Kwara state will participate in 23 sporting events at the Games.
He said that the athletes were carefully selected from the grassroots, and that adequate attention was placed on screening criteria, ensuring that they are not over-aged.
Mallam Bako also said that the target was to surpass the records of their participation in the last Games, adding that the athletes have been promised reward for excellence, after the Games.
Captain of Team Kwara, Bankole Abdulraheem, a weightlifter expressed optimism that the athletes will excel in Asaba. Abdulraheem, a student of Government Secondary School, Oja-Gboro said that the athletes are fully prepared for the Games.
In her remark, Board member of the Commission, Mrs Monisola Yemisi encouraged the athletes to comport themselves and eschew actions that portray the state in a bad light.
Others present at the briefing are Mallam Abdullahi Yunusa Lade, Mrs. Monisola Yemisi Makanjuola, both Board members, the Commission Secretary, Aron Haruna Tsado, the Head of Organising, Mallam Hamidu Olówó, Mrs. Afusat Abisoye and others.
