Nigeria Customs Chief Announces Mandatory Drug Test For Incoming, Serving Personnel

Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has announced that the Nigeria Customs Service will subject all incoming and existing officers to a mandatory drug test as part of its ongoing reforms.

Mr Adeniyi made the announcement during the closing session of the CGC’s 2025 Conference in Abuja, stating that the measure is intended to ensure that no recruit enters the Service with tendencies that could compromise judgment, security responsibilities, or operational integrity.

While the directive targets new recruits, serving officers will also undergo testing as the Service advances toward becoming a fully drug-free institution.

He explained that the exercise will be conducted for personnel across all Zones, Commands, and at the Headquarters.

The Service, he added, will no longer tolerate situations where officers make sensitive decisions while under the influence of drugs.

According to him, past incidents of erratic behavior and poor decision-making in some Commands were traced to substance misuse.

Mr Adeniyi emphasized that the Service aims to avoid spending resources on rehabilitating personnel whose drug-use problems should have been detected early.

He stressed that officers involved in revenue collection, enforcement, and border security must maintain sound judgment at all times.

The Customs Boss also urged officers to prioritise their health by undergoing regular medical checks, noting that physical and mental fitness are essential for effective service delivery.
