Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has safely left Guinea-Bissau following the military coup that toppled the country’s government, the Federal Government has confirmed.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jonathan departed the country on a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas.
He had been in Guinea-Bissau to observe the presidential and legislative elections as head of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission.
Jonathan, alongside Filipe Nyusi and Issifu Kamara, condemned the coup, describing it as an attempt to disrupt the country’s democratic process and urging calm.
The Federal Government also denounced the takeover, describing it as an unconstitutional change of government and a violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
Guinea-Bissau was thrown into crisis after soldiers seized control, suspended elections, and briefly shut the country’s borders, which were later reopened.
