Secondary School Managements in Nigeria have been tasked to create Intellectual Property Clubs for students to enhance awareness on copyright.
Acting Kwara State Coordinator, Nigeria Copyright Commission, Barrister Abdullateef Lanre Abdullahi gave this indication at a Sensitization Programme organized by the Commission for Ilorin Comprehensive High School (ICOHS), to kickstart “Catch Them Young” (CTY) campaign in secondary and primary schools in Ilorin metropolis.
Barrister Abdullahi urged the students to harness their creativity as talents in different areas of copyright such as music, literature, art, audio visual, broadcast, sound recording, and other areas related to Intellectual Property should be discovered early enough and protected for economic gains.
He pointed out that the awareness is meant to prepare the minds of the younger generations on the need to be creative in their own ways, detest piracy in all forms by learning to respect other people’s creative rights and refrain from dealing with materials unauthorized by their original owners.
According to him, this initiative aligns with the Nigerian Copyright Commission’s goal of fostering an environment where creativity thrives, especially among Nigerian youths.
Barrister Abdullahi charged students to face their studies, read wide and start thinking of what they can create to benefit others in the society.
Principal of School,.Mr. Imam Abubakar Abdulrasheed expressed the gratitude of the School Staff and Management Board to the Commission for deeming it fit to start the “Catch Them Young” initiative with their school and promised to invite the Commission for the official inauguration of their Copyright Club soon.
Highpoint of the awareness was a symbolic handing over of fliers to the school management, and a copy of the Commission’s publication titled “What is Copyright”.
