Force Criminal Investigation Department(FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, has intercepted a shipment containing 300 rounds of live ammunition and other prohibited items following actionable intelligence.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the FCID, ASP Aminat Mayegun, disclosed the development while briefing journalists in Lagos today.
She explained that the operation was initiated after credible intelligence was received by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Annex, Mrs Margaret Ochalla.
According to the briefing, the driver conveying the consignment was apprehended and subjected to questioning.
A comprehensive search of the container, conducted in the presence of a clearing agent and the alleged receivers, resulted in the recovery of 300 rounds of 9mm ammunition hidden inside a Nissan Frontier pickup truck.
Additional items seized include two Toyota Sienna vans, another Nissan Frontier pickup, a Scion XA vehicle, 24 bags of foreign rice, seven bales of used clothing commonly referred to as okirika, cartons of vegetable oil, and assorted household goods.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the shipment.
Preliminary investigations have traced the consignment to a shipper based in the United States who allegedly failed to declare the ammunition and other contraband on the bill of lading.
Investigators believe the prohibited items were intentionally concealed among legitimate cargo to evade port security screening.
The FCID is currently investigating the source and intended destination of the ammunition and examining possible links to broader criminal or arms-trafficking networks.
The department is collaborating with the Nigeria Customs Service and the Department of State Services to ensure coordinated intelligence-sharing and prosecution in accordance with the Firearms Act and other applicable laws.
The FCID leadership reaffirmed its commitment to combating insecurity and encouraged members of the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies, stressing that the department remains focused on dismantling criminal networks and ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
