IMAN LECTURE: Move Death Warrant Signing To Judiciary, Lawyer Urges

Legal Practitioner, Barrister Numan Sulaiman has harped for alteration of the law to shift signing of death warrant from Executive to Judiciary to get rid of hardened criminals in Nigeria.
Barrister Sulaiman gave this indication while delivering a lecture on the topic ” Islamic And Social implications Of Non-Execution Of Death Sentences In Nigeria” at the ongoing Ramadan Lecture Series organized by Islamic Missionaries Association of Nigeria IMAN, in Ilorin.
He expressed dismay that the law empowering Governors to sign a death warrant has been inactive due to assent decline and suggested judges from lower  to supreme courts be empowered by law to sign death warrant immediately after judgement.
Barrister Sulaiman who is a member of Council of Ulama in the state maintained that implementation of signing of death warrant by the judges should be implemented by the Executive.
According to him, Nigerian Governors declining assent to death warrant has escalated the spate of insecurity in the Country.
The prominent member of Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria MULAN, charged Nigerian leaders to take a cue from Saudi Arabia, China and other Nations that prioritize implementation of capital punishment to reduce crimes in their Countries.
The Legal Practitioner described amnesty and Presidential Pardon for sentenced criminals as gross abuse of the law that excersabated impunity in the Country.
Barrister Sulaiman bemoaned State and National Assemblies for always disregarding stakeholders submissions beneficial to the well-being of the people during Public Hearings and urged them to turn a new leaf.
Meanwhile the lecture continues today with the topic ” Stress Management As A Preventive Measure For Disease Control ” to be delivered by Dr Ridwanullahi Apaokagi of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital at IMAN Centre New Yidi Road Ilorin beginning at half past four in the evening.
