Ahead of the primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), two Senators, Oyelola Ashiru (Kwara South) and Sadiq Suleiman Umar (Kwara North) have made a dramatic volt face on their bid for gubernatorial contest in Kwara State.
The two National Legislators have, instead, obtained expression of interest and nomination forms of the ruling party to run for the Senate for third term.
It was gathered that both Ashiru and Sadiq Umar are currently serving their second term in the National Assembly.
It would be recalled that a few weeks ago the two National Assembly members formally declared their intention to run for governor in 2027 on the platform of the APC
While Sadiq Umar banked on the agitation for gubernatorial seat to shift to Kwara North to sway in his favour, Ashiru reportedly capitalized on his influence as a principal officer in the Senate to fly the flag of the party during the conduct of the primaries.
Investigation showed that the duo, having realized that the coast remains unclear for their governorship aspiration, resolved to have another shot in the Senate
For Sadiq Umar in particular, Kwara APC Elder Caucus endorsed his candidacy at a recent press conference held in Ilorin, urging the hierarchy of the party to consider him as its flag-bearer.
Ashiru obtained APC senatorial forms with receipt number 009010 and with serial form number 0000255.
Others aspirants from Kwara South that picked the senatorial forms include Onijala Olutola John, Oluwasola Samuel Ajimati and Muritala Olabanji Anolola.
This medium reports that the APC’s senatorial forms of Sadiq Umar are with receipt number 008155 and serial number 0000290.
Those eyeing Kwara North senatorial seat alongside the incumbent legislator (Sadiq Umar) are Mohammed M. Abubakar, Attahiru Abdulkadir Adamu, Taoheed Toyin and Kareem Musa Mohammed.
