In commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council has called for the implementation of a living wage for journalists, noting that the current earnings of many practitioners are at variance with their responsibilities and contributions to society.
This is contained in a joint statement by the state Council Chairman of NUJ, Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed, and Secretary, Mahmood Olayinka Alaya, and made available to newsmen in Ilorin on Sunday.
The council also advocated improved welfare for media professionals and noted with concern that journalists in Nigeria are poorly remunerated despite the demanding nature of their work.
The NUJ renewed its call for the full implementation of the Media Salary Structure, including hazard allowances and other entitlements for journalists employed in federal and state government establishments, while also urging private media proprietors to prioritize the welfare of their staff and ensure fair and adequate compensation.
The union expressed concern over the growing trend of underemployment within the profession, describing it as a factor that weakens the integrity and effectiveness of journalism in the country.
It called on the federal and state governments as well as security agencies to refrain from intimidating journalists in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
The union emphasized the critical role of the media in holding leaders accountable and strengthening democratic governance.
The NUJ warned that any attempt to harass or suppress journalists undermines press freedom and threatens the nation’s democracy.
It tasked relevant stakeholders to support initiatives that promote professionalism, capacity building, and sustainable employment in the media sector.
While celebrating journalists across Kwara State for their resilience and dedication, the NUJ encouraged them to remain committed to ethical standards and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, despite prevailing challenges.
The statement reaffirmed the union’s commitment to defending press freedom and advocating improved working conditions for journalists across the state and the country at large.
