Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has approved the commencement of the Public Health Nursing and Community Midwifery programmes at Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, Oke Ode (KWCONOO).
The Provost of the College, Alhaji Olanrewaju AbdulQuadri, announced this significant achievement on Monday during a general meeting with the management and staff of the institution. He explained that the approval followed a successful accreditation exercise conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria after the College satisfied all stipulated requirements.
The Council subsequently deployed an accreditation team to assess the institution’s readiness to commence the programmes.
The Provost disclosed that efforts are already underway to facilitate students’ enrolment through partnerships with non-governmental organisations, local government sponsorship schemes, and self sponsorship opportunities for prospective candidates.
Speaking on the admission requirements, he explained that applicants seeking admission into the Community Midwifery programme are not required to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.
Interested candidates with the requisite O’ Level science qualifications are eligible to apply. Similarly, registered nurses seeking admission into the post basic Public Health Nursing programme may apply directly to the College, subject to meeting the prescribed admission requirements.
Alhaji AbdulQuadri described the approval of the two programmes as a major milestone in the continued growth of the institution. He noted that the development would further strengthen the College’s capacity to produce competent healthcare professionals, contribute to improved healthcare delivery at the community level, and provide additional opportunities for individuals aspiring to build careers in the health sector.
He further stated that graduates of the two year Community Midwifery programme will be awarded the Licensed Community Midwife (LCM) qualification upon successful completion of their training, while graduates of the Public Health Nursing programme will be awarded the Registered Public Health Nurse (RPHN) qualification.
The Provost assured prospective applicants and other stakeholders that further details regarding admissions, application procedures, and the commencement dates for both programmes would be communicated through the College’s official communication channels.
He encouraged interested candidates to monitor the College’s platforms for subsequent announcements.
