OPINION:A Telescopic Illustration of Sardauna Title in Ilorin Emirate

By Gidado Muhammad Bashir, Ph.D

On the 29th of August, 2024 Maimartaba, the Emir of Ilorin Emirate and environs; His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu Gambari approved the appointment of the Executive Governor of Kwara state Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON as Sardauna of Ilorin Emirate. By this appointment, Governor AbdulRazaq became the second person to hold this revered title in the Ilorin Emirate. The late Alhaji Umoru Aminu Saro was the first holder of the title. Meanwhile, it is not out of place that little light is shed on the meaning of the title and what is expected of the holder. Thus, to achieve these identified aims, this excerpt will be examined from dual angles; linguistic and political.

Linguistically, the word “Sardauna” serves dual interpretations; a title and a name, and can be broken down into two parts first, “Sarda” (Hausa: ساردا) means “warrior”, “commander”, or “chief” and “Una” (Hausa: una) means “of the palace” or “royal”. So, when combined, “Sardauna” (Hausa: ساردونا) roughly translates to mean “Warrior of the Palace”, “Royal Commander”, “Commander of the Palace” and “Chief Warrior”

In essence, the name “Sardauna” signifies a strong, powerful, and authoritative figure, closely associated with the royal or palatial hierarchy.

In Northern Nigeria, the title “Sardauna” is often bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, bravery, or loyalty to the Emirate or its rulers.

On the other hand, the political approach shows that in the traditional Emirate political arrangement in Northern Nigeria, the Sardauna is a high-ranking title, a position that holds significant influence and authority. Here’s what it entails: the word “Sardauna” linguistically speaking is derived from the Hausa language, where “Sarda” means “warrior” or “commander,” and “Una” means “of the palace” or “royal.” So, Sardauna roughly translates to “Warrior of the Palace” or “Royal Commander.”

*Traditional Role:* The Sardauna is typically the second-in-command to the Emir (the monarch) in the Emirate’s political hierarchy. He serves as the Emir’s chief advisor, confidant, and representative. The Sardauna’s responsibilities include:

1. Military leadership: He leads the Emirate’s military forces and oversees defense and security matters.
2. Administrative duties: He assists the Emir in governing the Emirate, including managing its affairs, resolving disputes, and implementing policies.
3. Ceremonial roles: He participates in important ceremonies, such as coronations, turbaning, and other significant events.
4. Advisory functions: He provides counsel to the Emir on matters of state, politics, and diplomacy.

In essence, the Sardauna is a powerful and trusted figure who supports the Emir in maintaining order, stability, and prosperity within the Emirate.
