A professor at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has criticized the state of postgraduate education after finding himself alone in a scheduled M.Sc. Popular Culture lecture.
Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, a Professor of Media and Cultural Communication at BUK, shared his frustration on social media after students failed to attend his lecture on Social Media as Popular Culture.
The class, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 24, was expected to focus on the influence of social media on contemporary culture. By 2:40 p.m., however, the professor was the only one present in the lecture hall.
“So hugely popular that there is standing room only in the class,” he wrote sarcastically. “I will wait one more hour! All by my lonesome self.”
Professor Adamu, a former Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), described the incident as a sign of declining commitment to education, even among postgraduate students.
“Sigh. The state of our education. And this is a POSTGRADUATE class for mature students!” he lamented.
His comments have sparked debates on academic discipline, postgraduate students’ attitude toward learning, and the effect of digital alternatives on in-person lectures.
Some have linked such incidents to the increasing preference for online learning, while others point to a lack of accountability in higher institutions as a reason for poor classroom attendance.
