Kwara Govt Vaccinates 132,792 Ruminants Against Anthrax

In a bid to curtail zoonotic diseases across the state, Kwara State Government has vaccinated 132,792 animals in the just concluded state-wide mass vaccination of susceptible animals such as cattle, sheep and goats, across the state.
 State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Hon Oloruntoyosi Thomas disclosed this, while presenting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s scorecard, at a quarterly inter-ministerial press briefings, held at the state’s Ministry of Finance.
Giving the figure of ruminants vaccinated, the Commissioner explained that a total number of 110,241 cattle were vaccinated while 16,009 and 6,542 sheep and goats were vaccinated respectively.
She added that within the quarter under review, the newly created Ministry inaugurated a Live Bird Market, to create growth opportunities for fowl sellers and poultry farmers.
The Commissioner explained further that, the market is to serve as surveillance point, to prevent transmission of zoonotic diseases.
Hon Thomas also mentioned that Cadre Harmonise analysis was carried out with the results presented to the Nation, Ecowas and the United Nations by the National Task Force, adding that the Ministry is fully committed to building a vibrant, modern, and inclusive livestock sector.
She emphasized on the fact that; “the Ministry’s projects were carefully designed to create jobs, boost food security and promote peace.”
She therefore highlighted the Ministry’s achievements through intervention programmes like the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) and Special Agro Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) Programme, stressing government’s commitments to the Ministry’s major mandate of unlocking hidden potentials in the livestock sector.
The Commissioner further disclosed to newsmen that plans are underway to embark on rabies vaccination in the stat, explaining that the present administration would do everything possible to control and eliminate rabies incidents resulting from dog and cat bites.
