President of the Nigerian Political Science Association, NPSA, Professor Hassan Saliu, has called for caution in the wake of the proposal for additional creation of 31 States pending before the House of Representatives.
Professor Saliu, who said this in an interview with Journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, lent credence to the proposal and suggested that more States would encourage participation in the political process.
According to him, based on the theory of participation in the political process, it would be difficult to defeat the argument for additional state creation in Nigeria.
The Don, however, expressed his concern for the effect of creation of more States, which he said, was due to the poor performance of the State Governors and their failure in enacting good governance.
The Professor of Political Science blamed the poor performance of the existing States on their administrations’ poor digestion of the concept of democracy
He explained that the basis for the lackluster performance is the poor digestion of the concept of democracy
Professor, however, called on the administration to seek more caution before adding more states to the existing 36 and the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking on the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa’s proposal to change 6-3-3-4 system of the education in Nigeria to 12-4 system, he said, there is nothing bad in changing policies to reflect the dynamism in the society.
Professor Saliu, however, expressed worry whether the new policy has been thought through in ensuring that it is not meaningless afterwards.
