Kwara State has recorded a significant improvement in its standing at the National Sports Festival, moving from 18th place at the 2022 edition held in Asaba to a joint 13th-place finish in the just-concluded festival.
In a notable outcome, Kwara State tied with Kano State, as both states secured the same medal tally: 6 gold, 11 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
This upward movement in the national ranking has been widely celebrated by stakeholders in the state’s sports sector, who described it as a testament to the efforts of the Kwara State Sports Commission, coaches, and athletes.
Observers have pointed to the improved preparation, better welfare for athletes, and increased focus on grassroots development as key reasons for the state’s resurgence in national sports.
A Senior State official posited that this result shows that Kwara is gradually reclaiming its rightful place in Nigerian sports and attributed the success to product of teamwork, planning, and the resilience of the athletes.
With this performance, expectations are high that Team Kwara will continue to rise and possibly break into the top 10 in future editions of the festival.
