Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a new allowance structure for members of the National Youth Service Corps serving in the State, increasing the monthly payment from N4,000 to up to N50,000.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Njoku Ukoha, disclosed this in a statement on Friday where he described the review as aligning with the Federal Government’s recent adjustment of the National NYSC allowance to N77,000.
In the statement, Mr Njoku Ukoha, confirmed that under the revised structure, every corps member will receive a base allowance of N20,000.
He explained that those posted to State Government establishments will get an additional N10,000, while Corps Members in medical and teaching roles will earn an extra N30,000 monthly.
Mr Ukoha reiterated that the increment is part of efforts to strengthen public sector staffing and encourage professionals to serve in key sectors.
The State Government noted that this is the first major adjustment in 27 years and reflects ongoing reforms in youth development, healthcare, and education.
Mr Ukoha emphasized that the government recently implemented the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers across the state and local governments.
He added that their administration has also renovated facilities at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende, including internal roads and power supply upgrades and about 35 per cent of Abia’s budget is currently allocated to health and education.
Mr Ukoha maintains that with the new allowances, Abia becomes one of the highest-paying states for NYSC members.
