The Pioneer Professor of Nursing Science, Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah has identified limitations of technology in the nursing profession.
Professor Musah gave this indication while presenting a paper as the guest speaker at the 2nd Oath Taking and Induction Ceremony of 2024/2025 Nursing Science Graduands at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, titled “Nursing in the 21st Century: Bridging Tradition With Technology”
She noted that technology could argument nursing but can not replace presence, compassion, contextual judgment, advocacy, and moral responsibility to safeguard patients.
The Don explained that as technology reshapes the workforce, the hearth of nursing remains unchanged and grounded in therapeutic relationships, cultural safety, human dignity, and ethical practice.
Professor Musah pointed out that nursing practice now rashaped with electronic health records, clinical documentation, telehealth, remote monitoring, and artificial intelligence.
She described nursing as central to achieving universal health coverage, and the increasing population of health needs necessitated urgent requirements for more investment in nursing education, leadership, and job creation.
The Scholar cautioned the inductees against violation of Ethical Considerations for 21st Century and urged them to safeguard data privacy and confidentiality, algorithmic fairness and transparency, informed consent in digital environments and also patient autonomy.
The Don charged them to set their goals and always work within the ambit of nursing redefinition by the International Council of Nurses to excel in their professional calling.
Professor Musah appreciated the Acting Dean, Faculty of Nursing Sciences – Dr. Mulikat Ibrahim, the Provost, College of Health Sciences – Prof. Enoch Afolayan and the University Community for extending the invitation to her and for the hospitality during her short stay in the institution.
Earlier, before the induction ceremony, Professor Musah paid a courtesy visit on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lateef Oladimeji, Fcipm in his office where he paid glowingly tributes to her and congratulated her for attaining sterling academic milestones.
