Kwara State Polytechnic Journalism Department Marks World AIDS Day

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin today marked World AIDS Day.
The event took place at the Rear Admiral Muhammad Lawal Auditorium, Ilorin.
Speaking at the event, the Head of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Mr Idris Yissa, urged students to understand the social effects and challenges of HIV and AIDS in society.
He said the day was set aside to enlighten and educate students and the public, stressing that HIV and AIDS should not define individuals but that society must treat those living with the virus with dignity and respect.
A Guest Speaker, Dr Selim Alabi, a professional budget manager, described AIDS as a serious but manageable condition when treated with proper care.
He called on the federal government to strengthen infrastructure and healthcare support, noting that responding to HIV and AIDS is a collective responsibility.
Alabi also emphasized the need to remember and support victims through sustained financial and medical assistance, similar to practices in other countries.
In his submission, Dr Oyeniyi Abdulrosheed Muhammed, charged journalists and media students to intensify awareness campaigns through online platforms and social media such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and TikTok.
He highlighted prevention strategies and urged society not to neglect people living with HIV and AIDS but to give them opportunities to achieve their life goals and fully integrate into society.
Other dignitaries, who addressed the gathering, included the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kwara State Council, Mr ‘Lanre Ahmed Abdullateef; and the Director of Health, Dr Ayeni Olawale.
The Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Dr (Engr) Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, attended the programme alongside the Deputy Rector, Dr (Mrs) Felicia Bolanle.
Also present were AIT Correspondent Mr Femi Akobi; NUJ Secretary Mr Olayinka Alaya, and a member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Mrs Rukayat Shittu, who joined students in commemorating the day.
Awards were presented to invited guests and contributors to the success of the event, including Dr Selim Alabi; Dr Oyeniyi Abdulrosheed Muhammed, Mr Olufadi Balarabe, and other executives recognized for their support.
