Kwara State once again underlined its growing dominance in Nigerian sports as its athletes delivered outstanding performances at the 2nd edition of the SIAO PSA Squash Tournament, with multiple players booking places in today’s grand finals at the Squash Section, Lagos Country Club today, December 13, 2025.
In the Ladies’ semifinals, Rofiat Abdulazeez (Kwara) powered past Zainab Ishola (Lagos) with a convincing 3–1 victory (11/6, 7/11, 11/8, 11/5), while Mosturat Durosilorun (Kwara) edged compatriot Faidat Soliu in a thrilling 3–2 encounter (10/12, 12/10, 12/10, 7/11, 11/5), setting up a strong Kwara presence in the title race.
The Men’s semifinals also delivered high drama.
Gabriel Olufunmilayo (NSSCD) survived a tough test against Quadry Yusuf, winning 3–2 (7/11, 8/11, 11/8, 11/6, 11/6), while Shuaib Giwa (Kwara) produced a solid display to defeat Abel Shedrack (Rivers) 3–1 (11/9, 11/5, 4/11, 11/8), further boosting Kwara’s medal hopes.
As the finals take place today, Saturday, December 13, 2025, Kwara’s impressive showing continues a remarkable trend of excellence across multiple sports.
Stakeholders have attributed this sustained success to the visionary leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, whose unwavering commitment to sports development has created an enabling environment for athletes to thrive.
According to them, Governor’s consistent investment in youth and elite sports is increasingly yielding results on national and international stages.
They commended Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bolakale Adisa Mogaji, whose strategic reforms, athlete-focused policies, and support for less-publicised sports like squash have transformed Kwara into a veritable powerhouse.
With Kwara athletes once again shining at a PSA-sanctioned event, today’s finals present another opportunity for the state to consolidate its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading centres of sporting excellence.
