Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) today officially commenced its 2025 Press Week celebration with an endurance trek aimed at promoting physical fitness and mental alertness among journalists in the state.
Journalists drawn from various chapels converged on the NUJ Press Centre, Ilorin as early as 6:50 a.m. for the exercise, which saw participants trek from the Press Centre through Offa Road to Ahmadu Bello Way, and back to the NUJ Press Centre.
The event also featured an aerobic session coordinated by an external fitness instructor, further engaging members in physical activities designed to enhance their overall well-being.
Addressing Journalists after the exercise, the Kwara State Chairman of NUJ, Ahmed ‘Lanre Abdullateef, explained that the initiative was part of the union’s commitment to ensuring that members remain physically fit and mentally alert in the discharge of their professional duties.
Ahmed assured members that the endurance trek and fitness exercise would become a regular feature under his leadership, adding that a healthy journalist is better positioned to contribute meaningfully to societal development.
He commended members for their impressive turnout and active participation.
The NUJ chairman urged journalists to participate actively in other activities lined up for the 2025 Press Week celebration, announcing that a medical outreach and health talk would take place on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.
According to him, the medical outreach would provide members with the opportunity to check their vital signs and undergo eye screening.
He disclosed that the outreach is being organized in collaboration with the state chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors and Opeyemi Mega Eye Clinic.
As part of the partnership, he said the eye clinic will offer a 20 percent discount to members who require comprehensive eye treatment.
Ahmed further revealed that the Press Week grand finale would hold on Friday, featuring a public lecture to be delivered by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, which would be followed by a dinner and award night to recognize outstanding journalists and stakeholders who have contributed to the growth of the profession.
He added that the Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is expected to grace the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour, and urged members to attend the programme promptly.
