Yobe Government has approved the implementation of a weigh-in allowance for journalists and non-journalists in the state-owned media outfits.

The approval is contained in a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Mrs Zainab Muhammad Ago, on behalf of the Head of Service in Damaturu.

It stated that the approval followed a joint request by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union (RATTAWU).

The circular explained that the request is in pursuance of the weight-in allowance applicable to workers in radio and television stations, as well as the State Council for Arts and Culture.

It directed the implementation of the allowance as approved by the Head of Service.

According to the circular, journalists are to receive 35 per cent of their basic salary, while non-journalists will receive 20 per cent of their basic salary.

It added that members of the two unions had been enjoying the allowance prior to the implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage.

It further directed the Ministry of Finance to implement the allowance accordingly.
