Summit University, Offa, has concluded arrangements to host the fourth edition of the KU8+ International Conference, an academic gathering expected to attract researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and scholars from 35 universities across Nigeria and beyond.
Scheduled for August 6 to 8, the conference will focus on the theme, “Strengthening Higher Education for Inclusivity and Resilience: Bridging Research, Practice and Societal Impact.”
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Abiodun Musa Aibinu, described the event as one of the country’s most influential higher education collaborations and emphasised the growing need for universities to translate research findings into practical solutions capable of addressing pressing societal challenges.
According to Aibinu, institutions of higher learning must continually adapt to the changing demands of society by ensuring that research outcomes contribute directly to economic growth, technological advancement and sustainable development.
Established by universities across Kwara State and the North-Central region, the KU8+ Consortium has steadily expanded since its inception, with previous editions hosted by the University of Ilorin, Al-Hikmah University and Kwara State University.
This year’s conference marks the first time the event will be held outside Ilorin, a development widely regarded as a significant milestone for the consortium and for Summit University.
The conference will feature a keynote address by renowned educationist Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, while the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Olugbemiro Jegede, and legal scholar Professor Yusuf Ali (SAN) will deliver lead papers.
A major component of the programme is the pre-conference workshop designed to strengthen the connection between academic research, public policy and industrial development. Organisers believe such collaborations will help transform innovative ideas into commercially viable solutions with measurable social impact.
For the first time in the history of the conference, participants will also engage in poster presentations showcasing research projects and emerging innovations. Among the featured projects is Summit University’s artificial intelligence-driven initiative aimed at addressing the persistent challenge of egg theft in poultry farms.
Aibinu maintained that the conference extends far beyond academic discourse, noting that the objective is to foster innovation, deepen collaboration among institutions and promote evidence-based policymaking.
Preparations for the event have reached an advanced stage, according to the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Asimiyu Olamilekan Murana, who disclosed that close to 600 abstracts had already been submitted by researchers from within and outside the country.
Murana explained that technical, editorial, logistics and hospitality teams had been mobilised to ensure the successful hosting of delegates and participants.
As part of efforts to strengthen the long-term impact of the conference, the consortium plans to establish dedicated academic journals and launch an official digital platform to increase the visibility of research outputs.
Government agencies, investors, financial institutions and industry stakeholders are also expected to participate in discussions on research funding, innovation management and the commercialisation of academic discoveries.
The Head of Corporate Affairs at Summit University, Mrs Nafisat Mustapha, identified the increasing number of female vice-chancellors within the consortium as another defining feature of the alliance, describing the development as an indication of the growing influence of women in academic leadership.
Beyond its academic objectives, the conference is expected to provide students with opportunities to establish professional networks, identify potential mentors and explore entrepreneurial pathways emerging from research and innovation.
Aibinu expressed confidence that the gathering would deepen collaboration among participating institutions, improve the global visibility of Nigerian scholarship and produce outcomes capable of shaping the future of higher education on the continent.
With hundreds of participants expected in Offa over the next few days, attention is now focused on an event many stakeholders consider a defining moment in the continuing effort to align research, innovation and societal development within Nigeria’s higher education system.
