Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed an attack by armed bandits on Gidan Asarki, a community near Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
The attack, which occurred around nine o’clock on Sunday night, left one resident with a gunshot wound to the leg, while twenty-eight cattle were reportedly rustled.
Police spokesperson, Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident on Monday, saying the attackers invaded the community and escaped with the livestock.
Residents said the gunmen threatened members of the community and demanded that students living in the area be brought out.
However, the incident occurred during the university holiday, when many students were reportedly away.
A resident, Hussaini, said the victim survived the shooting and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Another resident, Jameel Muhammad, also confirmed the attack, stating that the gunmen took away more than twenty cattle.
As of the time of filing this report, there were no confirmed reports of deaths or abductions.
The attack has renewed concerns over the security of communities surrounding the university, particularly rural settlements vulnerable to banditry and cattle rustling.
