White House has reiterated the United States government’s position recognising only two sexes, male and female, under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The position was restated in a post shared on the White House’s official X account on Saturday, declaring that “it is the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female.”
The statement reinforces the administration’s policy on biological sex, which Trump formalised on January 20, 2025, through an executive order titled Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.
Under Section Two of the order, the President declared that it was the policy of the United States to recognise two sexes, male and female.
The order defined sex as an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female, distinguishing it from gender identity.
It also directed federal agencies to apply the definitions in implementing federal laws and government policies.
Among other measures, the directive required government agencies to review and remove official statements, policies, regulations and communications considered inconsistent with the administration’s position.
It further instructed federal agencies to ensure that official forms requiring individuals to indicate their sex provide only male and female options.
The executive order formed part of Trump’s broader efforts to reverse policies introduced under his predecessor, Joe Biden, which recognised gender identity in various areas of federal administration.
During his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States in January 2025, Trump also pledged to recognise only male and female sexes as part of his administration’s policy direction.
