One person has been killed and five others injured in a clash during a political procession organised by the Obedient Movement in Asaba, Delta State.

The incident occurred on Saturday along Nnebisi Road during a rally in support of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The Delta State Police Command says it had warned the organisers against holding an open-road procession because of intelligence reports suggesting a possible outbreak of violence.

Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the organisers ignored the advice and proceeded with the rally.

He added that officers responded to a distress call, took the injured to hospital and reinforced security in the area.

Reacting, Peter Obi condemned the violence and called for an immediate investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The police say investigations are ongoing.
