A Don, Dr Kayode Mustapha Lambe, has called on the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to activate the spirit of getting the field of journalism elevated beyond the current status that has paved way for quackery.

Dr Lambe, a former Head, Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin made the call while delivering a paper titled “Quackery in Nigerian Media Industry: Implications on Credible on Journalism Practice” at the grand finale of the 2024 Press of Kwara State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held at Press Centre, Offa Road, GRA, Ilorin.

He tasked journalists to deploy relevant arsenal towards combating the scourge of quackery in the profession in Nigeria as the field of journalism is one of the most venerated professional practices and has remained endangered from inception.

Dr Lambe was of the view that given the commitments and sacrifices of journalism to creating a worthwhile living for the nation’s citizenry, the cancerous infliction of quackery within the practice requires deep conversation that could exterminate the menace before growing into a metastatic malignancy.

The Communication Expert pointed out that quackery represents the infiltration of the noble practice of journalism by unqualified, unethical, unschooled individuals who misrepresent the profession and the practitioners in all ramifications of their engagements.

The Don posited that as a profession saddled with the responsibility of educating, informing, and entertaining members of the society, it requires serious protection from charlatans’unbridled incursion.

He condemned increasing wave misinformation, disinformation and malfunction on social media and advocated the need curb the ugly trend.

Dr Lambe described quackery in the profession as injurious to effective service delivery and called on the hierarchies of NUJ to wage war against the menace tarnishing the image of the profession.
