Pensioners Threaten Nationwide Protest Over Unpaid Benefits

Coalition of Federal Pensioners has announced its intention to hold a nationwide protest due to delays in the payment of outstanding pension benefits owed to retired workers across the country.
The decision was made during a meeting in Lagos, where members expressed frustration over what they described as prolonged inaction by the government, despite numerous appeals and discussions.
The pensioners noted that they had previously postponed the protest on two occasions, following requests from security agencies for patience and further dialogue.
However, the coalition argues that the situation for retirees has worsened, with many experiencing significant hardship due to unpaid benefits.
They emphasised the necessity of the protest to highlight the struggles of elderly citizens who, after dedicating decades of service to the nation, are now facing difficulties without their rightful entitlements.
While the National Union of Pensioners (NUP) has urged caution, the extent of suffering among retirees has made mass mobilisation essential.
The coalition is calling on pensioners in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prepare for coordinated action if the government does not provide a clear and immediate plan for addressing the payment of benefits.
The planned protest is expected to be announced and executed soon, unless there is government intervention.
