Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of two of its students in a motor accident that occurred last night at Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout.
In a statement by the University management, signed by the Head of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Mr Olanrewaju Kuye, the institution clarified that, contrary to earlier media reports suggesting three students were killed, only two of the deceased were confirmed to be students of LASUSTECH.
The victims are identified as Oluwaseyitan Afolabi Emmanuel, a newly admitted 200-level Direct Entry student in the Department of Banking and Finance, College of Applied Social Sciences, and Ayomide Jagun, a 300-level student in the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology.
The University confirmed that no other LASUSTECH student was involved or receiving treatment in any hospital related to the incident.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the accident was caused by an unregistered truck loaded with sand that suffered brake failure, leading to multiple collisions, injuries, and fatalities.
LASUSTECH’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has reportedly taken charge of the situation to ensure a coordinated response and support for those affected.
He has contacted the General Hospital in Ikorodu and the Divisional Police Officer of the Shagamu Divisional Police Station, while working closely with the Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Health Services, Heads of the affected Departments, and Deans of the respective Colleges.
The University said the Students’ Representative Council has also been mobilised to support the ongoing efforts.
The Vice-Chancellor has directed immediate assistance for the bereaved families, with measures already underway.
LASUSTECH noted that it is reaching out directly to the parents and guardians of the deceased students to offer comfort and ensure arrangements for a befitting burial.
The Management extended condolences to the families of the departed students, as well as the entire university community, describing the deaths as an irreparable loss.
It pointed out that the institution remains committed to the safety and well-being of all members of its community.
It was gathered that three persons died and seven others sustained injuries in the crash, which involved multiple vehicles along Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the development last Saturday
The incident comes months after a similar tragedy in February 2025, when a newly admitted student, Emmanuel Nweke, died after falling from a two-storey building in the Lasunwon First Gate area of Ikorodu.
