President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his planned trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, to receive further security briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and Monday’s attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said the decision to postpone the trip was taken to allow President Tinubu to receive comprehensive security updates and oversee the government’s response to the incidents.
The President’s decision followed urgent security concerns and a formal request by the Kwara State Governor for additional reinforcements in the troubled Eruku–Ekiti axis.
In response, President Tinubu has directed the military and police authorities to deploy more personnel to the area and launch an aggressive manhunt for the perpetrators of the church attack.
President Tinubu had been scheduled to depart Abuja on Tuesday for the 20th G20 Summit of world leaders in South Africa and later proceed to Angola for the 7th AU–EU Summit. However, the president opted to suspend the trip in view of the recent security breaches.
He is now awaiting detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented him on a sympathy visit to Kebbi State, as well as operational briefings from the police and the Department of State Services on the Eruku attack.
The President reaffirmed his directive to security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the 24 abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi and to intensify operations aimed at restoring peace in all affected communities.
