Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, will tomorrow Saturday, August 29, 2026, lead government officials and other dignitaries to the closing ceremony of the 8th Kwara State Sports Festival.
The closing ceremony of the week-long sporting event is scheduled to hold at 3:00 p.m. at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl, George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin.
The festival, which brought together athletes from all 16 Local Government Areas of the state, has provided an avenue for competition, talent discovery and the development of grassroots sports in Kwara.
Speaking ahead of the closing ceremony, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Mallam Bolakale Adisa Mogaji, expressed satisfaction with the successful staging of the festival.
Mogaji described the discovery of promising young talents as one of the major highlights of the competition and commended Governor AbdulRazaq for his support and commitment to sports development in the state.
He said the Governor’s approval and support for the hosting of the festival had contributed significantly to the progress recorded in the sector.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Steve Olarinoye, said the closing ceremony would attract the Governor, Local Government Chairmen, the leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), sports administrators and other dignitaries.
According to Olarinoye, the closing programme will also feature the final athletics events, as athletes from the various Local Government Areas compete for honours and valuable points.
Meanwhile, the race for overall supremacy remains keenly contested, with Ilorin West Local Government currently leading the medal table.
Asa Local Government is in second position, while Ifelodun occupies third place. Ilorin East, Oyun and Offa Local Governments complete the current top six.
With the final athletics events still to be concluded, attention will turn to Saturday’s closing ceremony, where the overall winners of the 8th Kwara State Sports Festival will emerge.
