Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says President Bola Tinubu is committed to conducting free, fair and credible general elections in 2027.

Idris gave the assurance during an interview with TRT World on the sidelines of the TRT World Forum 2026 in Istanbul, Türkiye.

He said the Federal Government would continue to support the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, while respecting its constitutional independence.

The minister added that the government would provide the necessary environment for the electoral body to carry out its duties and ensure that the wishes of Nigerians prevail at the polls.

On concerns about insecurity ahead of the 2027 elections, Idris said the government was strengthening the country’s security architecture through the recruitment of additional military personnel and the procurement of equipment for the Armed Forces.

He also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to freedom of expression and political participation but warned against the spread of fake news and misinformation.

Idris urged Nigerians, political actors and media practitioners to verify information before sharing it, warning that false reports could heighten political tensions and undermine confidence in the electoral process.

On artificial intelligence, the minister acknowledged its potential to improve journalism, governance and public communication but cautioned against its use to produce deepfakes and spread disinformation.

He also defended the Federal Government’s borrowing, describing it as a legitimate means of financing critical infrastructure and stimulating economic growth.

According to him, the important consideration is how borrowed funds are used and the benefits they deliver to citizens.

Idris, who is attending the forum at the invitation of the Turkish government, commended the organisers for bringing together world leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss global challenges.
