Retreat 2026: Nursing Students Urged To Uphold Professional Integrity

Nursing students have been charged to be committed to fostering integrity in their professional calling.

Dr. Faith Fedinand Nlumanze of Community Health Nursing Department, Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Nigeria gave the charge at a-2 Day Retreat 2026 of the Faculty themed ” Promoting Workplace Ethics, Professional Conduct and Academic Excellence: Strengthening Institutional Integrity in Nursing Education at Federal University, Otuoke”.

Dr. Nlumanze counseled the students to pursue excellence with honesty and tasked Faculty of Nursing Sciences to always groom students with noble values of nursing profession.

She identified consistency in policy implementation, curriculum integration, professional, accountability, innovative teaching, research and student support as strategies for strengthening Institutional Integrity.

In her Welcome Address, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah opined that the theme, “Promoting Workplace Ethics, Professional Conduct and Academic Excellence: Strengthening Institutional Integrity in Nursing Education at Federal University Otuoke”, delt directly to the foundation upon which Nursing profession rests.

Professor Toyin Musah maintained that Nursing is more than a career but a vocation built on compassion, discipline, and integrity as such, their responsibility as a Faculty is to ensure that these values are not only taught, but lived, within the classrooms, clinics, and daily interactions.

According to her, Workplace Ethics remind the practitioners that honesty, respect, and accountability must guide their decisions and relationships.

She elucidated that professional conduct challenges the nurses to model the standards expected of healthcare providers, inspiring the students to embody excellence in practice.

The Dean encouraged the participants to utilize this opportunity to renew their vision, strengthen the bonds, and chart a path toward a future where the Faculty of Nursing Sciences at Federal University Otuoke stands as a beacon of ethical leadership and academic distinction.

The Dean commended the Vice-Chancellor of institution, Professor Promise Mebine
for creating enabling atmosphere for Nursing profession to thrive.

In his submission, Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Promise Mebine applauded the Faculty for setting a pace at the Faculty.

The Vice-Chancellor lauded the Nursing Anthem lyrics and urged them to always recite it often to inculcate its lessons.

Also Speaking, Chairman Planning Committee, Mr. Lawrence Ayah Iruo described the retreat as a deliberate return to the core and time for deep reflection, honest appraisal, and strategic forward movement.

Mr Iruo is of the view that in an era where the healthcare landscape is rapidly evolving both locally and globally, hence the need for nurses and nurse educators to be ethically sound and professionally disciplined.

The retreat featured 13 paper presentations and a poem rendition depicting importance of Nursing profession by a 200 level Nursing Science Student, Okebe Ijeoma Stephanie.
