Rotary Club of Ilorin New Dawn has planted 50 trees at Gaa Imam Senior Secondary School, Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Planting the trees with the school management, Magic President of the Club, Rotarian Olatayo Olakunle Taiwo said the exercise is part of the monthly project of Club tagged “Environmental Month” to protect the school against environmental disasters.
Rotarian Olatayo noted that the choice of school for tree planting was as a result of need assessment carried out which indicated that the school is faced with the risk of erosion and winds that could blow off its roofs.
He identified tree planting as crucial for environment and well-being of human beings to mitigate erosion, flooding and improved quality of air.
Also President-elect of Rotary Club of Ilorin New Dawn, Rotarian Ademola Folake, submitted that trees are being planted to reduce the impact of global warming to to save the planet as there is no way human beings will live without plants.
Rotarian Ademola explained that the campaign of the tree planting was taken to school to instill the culture of tree planting on the students at younger age.
Rotarian Ademola elucidated the Club always collaborate with Ministries of Environment and Health to seek approval when carrying out their interventions
In her submission, President Nominee of Rotary Club of Ilorin New Dawn, Rotarian Yetunde Fatoyinbo described tree as life particularly in preventing disasters.
Rotarian Fatoyinbo maintained that the trees when matured would attract more oxygen and air in the school environment as lack of tree is detrimental to the school buildings.
She posited that Rotary Club has done its best in planting trees and charged the school management to guard them against consumption and mutilation by animals and counselled Nigerians to desist from indiscriminate cutting of trees to protect the environment.
Welfare Chairman of the Club, Rotarian Akinyele Femi said the Club had in the past provided stationary for the students and now supporting the school with tree planting to secure their environment
Past Assistant District Governor of the Club, RotarianTayo Babatunde explained that the trees planted would generate oxygen for people breath and prevent the school from other environmental hazards and insisted that environment without trees is harmful to human health.
Responding, Vice Principal Administration of the School, Mr Adegoke Damola thanked Rotary Club of Ilorin for the gesture and solicited more support in the areas of laboratory and other Infrastructural facilities to aid teaching and learning
Highpoints of event were symbolic planting and planting of the trees by the Rotarians and school staff and students.
