President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Super Eagles for their spirited effort in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, despite their painful exit in a dramatic playoff defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday night in Morocco.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu urged the team to move past the disappointment and begin full preparation for the 2025 African Cup of Nations, scheduled to hold in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026.
Daily Source reports that Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the World Cup were dashed after DR Congo edged the Super Eagles 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
President Tinubu noted that although the loss was painful, the players deserved commendation for their effort, particularly after securing victory in their first playoff match.
The President called for renewed support for the team and a thorough review of gaps within Nigeria’s football system.
He stated that this is the time to refocus and concentrate fully on the upcoming Cup of Nations, adding that the Super Eagles must work towards reclaiming their lost glory.
The President expressed confidence that with renewed commitment, Nigeria can bounce back strongly at the continental tournament.
