Imole Youth Accord Mobilization (IYAM) has condemned the arrest of one of its executives, Comrade Olaniyan Sodiq Akinola, a law student and the group’s Legal Adviser.

In a statement issued by the Chairman of IYAM, Hon. Odeyemi Muhydeen Oladele (Hammola), the group alleged that Akinola was arrested on Saturday at the Ido-Osun polling centre while monitoring the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

According to the statement, Comrade Sodiq Olaniyan was present at the polling centre to observe the PVC distribution exercise when concerns were raised over the conduct of the exercise.

The group claimed that instead of addressing those concerns in a lawful and transparent manner, he was arrested.

IYAM said the incident has raised serious concerns about the protection of citizens’ rights and the ability of election observers and other concerned Nigerians to participate peacefully in the electoral process.

The group reaffirmed its support for Comrade Sodiq Olaniyan, describing itself as a law-abiding political mobilization group committed to democracy, peace, and credible elections.

It also reiterated its commitment to justice, the rule of law, and the protection of every citizen’s constitutional rights.

As a mark of solidarity with its Legal Adviser, IYAM announced the suspension of all its activities until further notice.

The group called on the relevant authorities to ensure that due process is followed and that justice is served without fear or favour.

IYAM further condemned all forms of intimidation, harassment, or unlawful interference by any security agency before, during, and after the Osun State governorship election.

It stressed that a free, fair, and credible electoral process can only be achieved when citizens are able to participate without fear.
