Kano State Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Ibrahim Umar, has resigned his appointment, becoming the latest casualty of the political fallout following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress.
Hon Umar announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the governor and released to journalists on Monday evening.
He cited the widening rift between Governor Yusuf and his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as the basis for his decision.
He expressed gratitude to the governor for the confidence reposed in him, recalling his initial appointment as Director General of the Special Services Directorate in June 2023 and his subsequent elevation to commissioner.
Hon Umar described his time in office as a privilege and said he was honoured to have served the people of Kano in ensuring the state’s security.
However, he said recent political developments made it necessary for him to step aside in the interest of the state and the administration, stressing that the decision was taken after careful consideration.
Hon Umar reaffirmed his loyalty to the ideals of Senator Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which he said guided his service and emphasised justice, discipline and commitment to the people.
He pledged continued support for the government and people of Kano State and prayed for wisdom and strength for the governor.
Governor Yusuf had earlier on Monday officially defected to the APC at a ceremony held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano.
Hon Umar’s resignation brings the number of commissioners who have stepped down since the defection to four.
Others include the Commissioner for Humanitarian Services, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya; the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is the son of Senator Kwankwaso; and Yusuf Kofar Mata, who previously served in the Ministries of Tertiary Education and Science, Technology and Innovation.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Rabiu Saminu Danbappa, has also resigned his position, further stressing the growing shake-up within the government.
